Come to Mexico!!

It’s only January and I’m posting signs around campus for a spring break trip.  There’s even snow on the ground! I’m sick of the cold weather though.  For the last four months, I’ve been in England, and now that I’ve return to North Carolina it is still cold.  So Cuernavaca’s beautiful sunny weather is rather appealing right now.

After graduating last year, my friend, Cindy, headed down to Cuernavaca.  She’s had a love affair with Mexico for a while so it was right for her.  Along with teaching English, she helps out with this non-profit, Por un mejor HOY!  I had mentioned getting a group together to come down and see her.  When I returned stateside, she asked if I was serious.  I replied with, “Sure. Mexico. Why not?”

But now as I frantically scrambled around campus trying to find people to come do service in Mexico for spring break, I’m not so sure…what if I can’t get a group together?  My friends have already bailed on me….good excuses, I suppose.  One who is student teaching has a different spring break than us, another is already planning to use the break for serious thesis time, and the rest cite financial problems.  We are, after all, living in a recession.

If I can’t even convince my friends to come, how am I going to convince the rest of Elon?

Apparently I’ve learned something in my corporate communications classes.  I’ve already received a couple of e-mails in response to my e-net postings, and the student news show, Phoenix 14 wants to do a story on me.  Que chido.

News interview was a success!  Except for the fact that I can’t pronounce Cindy’s last name at all.  I attempted three different times to no avail….they can edit that in post though…hopefully.

16 people showed up at the meeting.  I don’t even think Casa Hoy can accommodate that many people.  I’m sure some will drop out…there is always a couple.  Plus, I made my friends come because I had this nightmare that I would be sitting in Moseley Fire Lounge all alone.  I’m so glad that wasn’t the reality.

Five girls have committed and put their money down.  Three are in ESA, the service sorority, with me.  The other two are Spanish majors and minors, which is good.  Hopefully they can translate for us, because my Spanish is very rusty.  But  we’re actually going to Mexico!!!

I don’t want to go to Mexico.  No, let me rephrase that. I want to go to Mexico, but I don’t want any of the obligations waiting for me back at school.  It’s my senior year and I’m burned out.  I’ve always been involved with a million different things, but for some reason I can’t keep up with everything this year.  I’m exhausted.  A service trip to Mexico would be fun, educational, and rewarding but I’m not sure if it’s what I need right now.  I think I need a real break.

There have been many reports in the media about violence in Mexico.  Our dean of students even issued a warning about travel to the country over spring break because of the “drug-related murder and mayhem south of the border.” While the use of the phrase “murder and mayhem” seemed a bit comical to me, I’m hoping the e-mail will cause other girls signed up for the trip to back out so I can get my act together.  Maybe then I’ll even start writing my thesis.
